About Thorney

The first recorded history of the village refers to Ancarig – the place where anchorites lived as religious hermits – in the sixth century.  It became known as Thorney – the Isle of Thorns – reflecting the position of the island in the middle of the fens, or marshes.

Archaeological investigations indicate that there has been settlement around Thorney from the Iron Age, Bronze Age and Roman times, before the first Christian settlers. However, the Danish invaders destroyed the religious settlement in 870, though it is said that the monks of Thorney escaped the attack.

Thorney was a monastic establishment until 1539. From 1551, after the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the estate passed to the Russell family. They were Earls and later Dukes of Bedford.

A community of Walloon Protestant refugees, originally from areas of Flanders that are now northern France, was settled here in the 17th century with their own church and minister, employing the ruins of the abbey for services in their own language. The Walloons had expertise in fenland drainage and assisted in the work of draining in the area. Much of the village was built at the command of the Dukes of Bedford, who wished to have a healthy place in which their estate workers could live. In the mid-19th century many buildings were added to the designs of the architect S.S. Teuton, himself a descendant of Huguenots.

Who We Are

As Christ-followers, each of us has a unique role in God's church

The Commission

“Go therefore and make disciples...”

The mission of New Hope Church is aligned with the commission Jesus gave to His disciples: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Every member plays a vital role in this community mission of making Jesus' disciples.

The Vision

New Hope Church envisions creating a community of authentic believers and transforming our village through the life-changing reality of the gospel. We aim to see people come to know Jesus as their King and Saviour. Our local church is part of God's wider family, comprising all nations, backgrounds, and ethnicities, fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 2:2-4.

What We Believe

"Anyone who really wants the truth ends up at Jesus" - Johnny Cash

God

We believe in one eternally existing God in three distinct persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. God is the creator of all things and worthy of all glory and praise. He is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom, justice, and mercy, and is unchangeable.

The Fall

Adam and Eve's disobedience brought sin into the world, distorting humanity's image and fellowship with God.

Revelation

God has revealed Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ, the Holy Scriptures, and all creation

Salvation and the Coming of the Kingdom

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God, lived a sinless life, and died on the cross for our sins. Salvation is found in Christ alone, who restores God's Kingdom on earth.

Mankind and Creation

Humans were created in God's image for His glory. Though originally without sin, humanity fell from grace through disobedience, fracturing all of creation

The Church and the Spirit

The Church is the visible body of Christ, sent to glorify God and proclaim the gospel. Jesus baptizes the Church with the Holy Spirit, empowering it to disciple others and transform the world.

Resurrection and the Return of the King

Jesus Christ will return to judge the living and the dead, ushering in the fullness of God's Kingdom.
